CSL Rocks! Test comment
I found it very informative and interesting .
CSL will be beneficial for our students. I'm sure that we have been providing great service and projects for our community throughout the years. Now it will be a chance for our school to receive the publicity for the work that we have been doing.
Awesome potential for our students and staff!!!!
I FEEL THIS WORKSHOP HAS OPENED A LOT OF EYES ABOUT HOW INPORTANT COMUNITY SERVICE IS REALLY NEEDED.
Interesting idea. I will probably not implement community service learning in my class room due to a lack of time.
CSL is a great concept and worthwhile. As an academic teacher, implementation is a great deal of work and planning. Obstacles are time, time, and time. As an academic teacher, community service appears better suited to the vocational side.
This was very informative. I will definitely bring the information to my students. I do not think I will be personally implementing a CSL project at this time. Being a math teacher my time is focused on planning and preparing students for MCAS. Also, as a special ed liason I am very busy with my caseload and this leaves little time for outside projects at the moment.
I thought that this workshop showed that Greater Lowell is giving back to the community. Also, there are many resources that are availible for teachers that want to go out in to the community and make a change. I'm glab that this workshop was shown
I will need to research this matter a bit more before I can say whether or not it will translate to my classroom. I think it is a great idea for our school. Our presenters were informative and enthusiastic so increasing teacher and student involvement doesn't seem like it will be a problem.
This was a very informative session where Community Service Learning was clarified. It would be more difficult to implement in the academic areas, however I can see the value of implementing in many of the shop areas. I feel it would be very beneficial to our students.
I thought it was a very good idea-excellent for our students to get involved in the community-learning and doing excellent! I wouldn't doubt that there are many projects that our students could become involved with and the teachers could relate them to the classes.
Excellent presentation. Also, our group was the first done with the "game" and we had a "100%" but didn't WIN anything--come on Mr. MoneyMan Ducharme!!!!!
It was very interesting to find out about community service learning and how it is different from community service and community based learning. Bob Sullivan did an excellent job with the presentation. I will be looking into this more in the future to see if there is an appropriate project to get my students involved in.
After attending the inservice, I now beleive that I can tell the difference between community service, community based learning, and service learning.
CSL is a great way to help students to get involved with the community. Our students need to have a sense of worth and I believe that this will help them to grow as a member of the community.
After attending the inservice, I now beleive that I can tell the difference between community service, community based learning, and service learning.
I would love to use CSL in my classroom; however,
I probably will not due to time constraints. In the academic subjects it's very hard to find the time to implement such a project. I do think it's worth considering the possibilities though.
Very interesting. We should brainstorm as a shop and I'm sure we would come up with various projects.
1. I will implement CSL because most of our students learn through engaging in activity with others.
2. Some obstacles I anticipate in implementing CSL is the amount of time required for a single project, especially in light of time alloted for each framework in the scope and sequence. Also, we will require transportation if it is necessary to visit a site, and possibly ask that students be excused from other techer's classes.
Community Service was interesting. I did not realize that there were three different types of community service.
Looking back over the past year, my students have been doing a lot of community service but not service learning.
Great to know that Mr. Ducharme is the man to see when we have a community service question.
Very good in service as usual. I am using some CSL in my classroom and would like to do more. I teach social studies and there is no substitute for having some one who was there explain an event to the students.
Great idea. All students and shops should be able to contribute to the community in some way. Acttivities will help bring together students, staff and teachers. It would be great to see all of us work together for the common good.
I think community service learning is a great idea. It's truly a "win-win" situation: the students learn and the cummunity benefits. And how appropriate for a technical high school, with its practical orientation.
This has great potential for our school and students. I hope this becomes a great part of school learning. I can already think of ways in which this would benefit the students in my shop.
Since 2001 Graphics students have painted Victorian silouhettes of Victorian characters on the Aiken Street Bridge wind barriers. I would characterize the project as Community Service.
I think that by having students learn something about the history of Lowell during the late nineteenth century this can become a Service Learning activity. If we develop the project, perhaps the Community Service Committee chairman would provide funds for paint and brushes.
CSL is a great idea for the whole school. I know how much most of the shops already go into the community and give back by building or making meals or what ever they are learning in shop. It will be great to see the acadamic side use what they are learning in history or Biology class for the good of the community.
Great Stuff!
What could be better than students learning about and helping to improve their community?
I will need to put some more thought into what project I could do and I will solicit imput from the students as well.
Thanks for the info and ideas!
I would have to learn more and see more examples of how classroom teachers are implementing csl.
I was not aware our students were so involved in their community.
Good job community service learners.
This was a start, need time to really look through the links.
Very informative...well done.
As a tech inst. I look forward to getting out in the community and doing a job for someone in need.
(The students would love it too!)Most projects would be very much learning based.
Get us out there Mr. Ducharme!
Thanks-
Any job that comes into my shop obviously has to do with my curriculum. If we couldnt fix or make the part, I wouldnt take the job. Not because it wouldnt go with our frameworks, but because we couldnt do the job.
after this inservice, I found that our students should be able to doa community service learning project. I feel the major problems that this project will face is that teachers will have to be a first the starting and motivating point to drive this program.
I think this is a great idea. I will have to see how I can implement it in my classroom. Ideally I would love to do this with all of my classes though it might take a few years to get fully integrated into the scope and sequence.
Nice job. The way it was presented enhanced our understanding of the differences between the various components of community service learning. I can think of a couple of opportunities which could be designated for a possible grant. Thanks
I know understand the difference between community service and community service learning.
This is something many of us have been doing, probably without realizing. I think it is great for publicity as well as getting students real life skills. It also provides them with something great to put on their resume.
It is clear that the students would get something out of Community Service Learning, hopefully a real sense of belonging to a community.
It is nice to see some ideas and samples of community service learning. I may do a community service learning project depending on the time it would take.
Community service learning is a great way for students to implement real life problems in the community to their curriculum.
Yes.
I think time may be an issue.
No.
I thought the presentation was very well presented.
Community Service Learning is a great opportunity for all students to be involved in their community. CSL could also be a useful tool for exposing our students to various issues in their neighborhoods that they may be unaware of. Being a support staff member doesn't allow me to implement the program but I do think it would be a great thing for the shops. Stacey O'keefe was awesome with her presentation. Very informative.
great way to expose our students to what goes within the community and help them to feel they are a part of the community and can make a difference
Will you implement Community Service Learning (CSL) in your class/program? Why or Why not?
I don't know yet.
2) What obstacles will you face in implementing CSL?
It's too premature to say.
3) Are there additional tools you might require to do a CSL project in your class / technical area?
It's impossible to anticipate that. Not at this point.
4) Please feel free to make any comments or suggestions about CSL.
The session was interesting and informative. Additionally, Mr. Morgan presented it in a dynamic way.
5) Thank you.
You're welcome.
I would like to try to do a CSL project. It's great to see how the students get so motivated and involved in a project that interests them. Obstacles - very new to me, but there is obviously plenty of support in the building to help out with this. Tools - not sure - depends on the project. Good workshop - very concise and practical.
I found the info very interesting, I would like to try to implement more Community Service Learning in my class.
I see no obstacles at this time.
Good presentation.
nice job Eric, more time needed to asimilate into our programs
I found today's session interesting. I would like to have learned more information as how to actually become involved, for example, who to contact, what organizations participate, and procedures involving such. I believe comuunity service is an important factor for learning for both the students and teachers.
I would like to try to incorporate CSL into my curriculum. I like the idea of students "owning" their ideas and plans to better the community. I think both the students and the community will benefit.
1.) I think it's a good way to teach children.
2.) not sure
3.) I'll have to look into it further before I can comment
4.) Thought the activity "What is it" was a good way of deciphering
the 3 community service areas
Very interesting and informative. CSL will be a great opportunity for the students. I probably won't be implementing it in my class because of the time factor. The technical studies seem to have the best opportunity for CSL projects.
i think that the service learning is a wonderful idea and would be a great way for the students to interact with people and put them in situatiions that they may face when they are out of high school.
Obstacles would be in finding topic that is in the frameworks and tying it to the curriculum.
Any outside speakers would greatly enhance the project. It would asllow the students to interact directly with an expert in the area.
This is a great idea.
yes, if the right project arises
cost,time,and transportation
without knowing the project at this time I cannot comment
I believe that Community Service Learning can work , but we need to have the feeder program provide us with opportunities tailored to specific areas, specifically science!
This will be a great opportunity for our students to get involved in the community and learn some practical skills, tranferable skills.
As a special ed teacher I would certainly partner with shop area teachers and others in a community service endeavor.
There could be a project that could become part of our senior academic requirements.
I would consider implementing Community Service learning in my classroom. This is the best way for students to learn. Pure learning is accomplisshed through solving real and relevant problems and being able to see the progress that you have made. The only obstacles I can see would be finding the time in the midst of everything else we must do. The curriculm packet seesm a nice start. Could someone post some ideas for project so that students and teachers could decide from as many options as possible?
After attending this inservice I can tell the difference between different types of learning experiences. However, I am unlikely to implement community service learning with my sophomore math classes because of the constraints of the MCAS and the need to get all students to proficient. There is an additional problem that students are from many different shops in different clusters (for example, masonry students are in the same math class with graphics arts, culinary, and early childhood ed students) and this makes identifying a community need which the students have skills to research and address while still learning a standards based math curriculum difficult.
Our facilitator did a great job with dividing up the class and was very thorough!!!
I enjoyed learning about CSL.
1. As an English teacher, I don't think I would be able to implement CSL in my classroom,
2. Obstacles include taking time away from preparing my kids for MCAS.
3. I think CSL is something our kids would be fanatastic at and hope to see more activities for them.
I have already received a request for community service and now that I know we have a coordinator and framework for it's successful completion I am pleased...great timing on this in-service
MR DUBY WAS QUITE ENGAGING. TIME WILL BE AN ISSUE. I THINK IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS THAT EXTRA EDUCATION TIED TO THE FRAMEWORKS SHOULD GO ALONG WITH EVERY OUTSIDE SCHOOL PROJECT. IT COULD BE TIED INTO THE CAREER CRUISING AND ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIOS. THE WORK SHOULD BE VIEWED BY WHOM IN THE COMMUNITY ASKED THE STUDENTS TO DO THE WORK.
